Program Highlights
Early Childhood Library Program: Preschool and Kindergarten
Elementary Program: Grades 1-5
Senior Program: Grades 6-12
- Pre 3 students were investigating animals. In Arabic library, students learned about sea animals by playing games, reading stories, and creating and decorating their own fish. In English library, students learned about habitats and asked questions about animals that live in hot and cold habitats.
- Pre 4 students were investigating plants. In Arabic library, students brainstormed their prior knowledge about plants and created a K-W-L chart about plants. After reading stories and learning more, students completed the K-W-L chart. Students also focused on the IB Learner profile caring. In English library, students investigated seeds by categorizing different types of seeds and identifying what seeds need to grow. Students enjoyed the story The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizolli, and wondered if a seed could really grow inside their bodies.
- Kindergarten students wondered how to take care of the environment, and investigated reducing, recycling, and reusing waste. In Arabic library, students brainstormed items that could be recycled or reused and made crafts out reused boxes. In English library, students categorized recyclables as glass, metal, paper, plastic, or cardboard and learned what happens to trash from their homes to a landfill or recycling center.
Elementary Program: Grades 1-5
- Grade 1 students learned to identify the theme or meaning of a story and to summarize a story. In Arabic Library, students continued working on the Arabic Reading Challenge. In English Library, students identified the theme/meaning of Butterflies for Kiri by Cathryn Falwell.
- Grade 2 students continued to work on the Arabic Reading Challenge in Arabic Library and worked on identifying fiction and nonfiction books and summarizing the story. In English Library, students learned about the Caldecott and Newberry medals and compared and contrasted award-winning books.
- Grade 3 students continued working on the Arabic Reading Challenge and practiced identifying the main idea and predicting. In English Library, students were introduced to how books are organized in the fiction section of the library, and practiced placing fiction books in correct alphabetical order.
- Grade 4 students continued the Arabic Reading Challenge and practiced oral and written summarization skills. In English Library, students were introduced to how books are organized in the library using the Dewey Decimal System and practiced placing books in correct order.
- Grade 5 students continued the Arabic Reading Challenge and practiced oral and written summarization skills. In English Library, students were introduced to how books are organized in the library using the Dewey Decimal System and practiced placing books in correct order.
Senior Program: Grades 6-12
- In Arabic, Grades 6 and 7 were introduced to the research process using the Big 6 Research Model, and practiced the first step of Task Definition.
- In English Library, Grades 6 and 7 identified different genres and classified books into their appropriate categories.
- Ms. Angela and Ms. Nancy collaborated on a poetry lesson for Grade 7 Language A students.
- Ms. Angela and Ms. Nancy collaborated on a lesson for Grade 8 Language B on writing book reviews and posting them on the Destiny Catalog.
- Mr. David L. and Mr. Islam collaborated with Grade 10 students on finding resources for their Personal Projects.
