Library Rules
In this unit we read many animal stories, including That’s Not Funny! by Jeanne Williams, in both English and Arabic. In every story, some animals behaved poorly. We used these a starting points to discuss library behavior and expectations. Students then worked collaboratively to create torn paper collage animals.

Accepting Differences
In this unit we read two stories with a common theme of accepting others who may be different. For The Crayon Box That Talked , by Shane DeRolf, students drew a picture on white paper using only one color. After reading and discussing the story, students drew another picture using many colors. Students then compared the pictures and decided that the pictures with many colors were better. We then played a Simon Says style game where students stood up if they had the characteristics called out. Students discussed that they had many similarities as well as differences, but that they could all be friends.

Finding Out About Qatar
In this unit, we discussed the difference between fiction and nonfiction, asking questions, and finding answers. Students viewed several nonfiction texts about Qatar. They identified the Table of Contents and Page Numbers. Students identified question words: Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How, and began to use these words to ask questions about Qatar.

Sharing the Planet—Animals
In this unit, we discussed the difference between fiction and nonfiction, and read many titles from each category. Students learned about habitats, and classified animals that live on farms, jungles, deserts, polar regions, and the sea. Students identified characteristics that allowed animals to live in hot and cold places. Students practiced getting information from pictures.

Parts of the Body
For this theme, we read Here Are My Hands by Bill Martin and Go Away Big Green Monster by Ed Emberley. Students participated in a felt board poem, Library Child, where they built a child’s face with each verse of the poem. Students also retold Go Away Big Green Monster with felt board pieces to create then take away parts of the monster’s face. After reading Here Are My Hands, students discussed things they could do with the different parts of their bodies.

Five Senses
For this theme, we discussed the five senses and being aware with My Five Senses, by Aliki. Then we experienced through our five senses as we read Hello Ocean, by Pam Muñoz Ryan. We listened to ocean sounds and touched rocks and shells collected from the ocean. Finally, we used our sense of sight to debate the popular optical illusion and read Duck, Rabbit, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.

My Family
We used Duck, Rabbit from the former unit to introduce graphs. Students demonstrated whether they thought the picture was a duck or a rabbit by taping their photo in the appropriate column. We discussed how graphs show information visually. We used the graph to determine which animal got more votes and less votes. We then read Five Little Ducks by Penny Ives and students retold the story with the felt board. We discussed the relationship between the mother duck and the baby ducks. Finally we read Bear’s Busy Family by Stella Blackstone that introduced all the members of the family including grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. While coloring a picture of a family, small groups worked on a graph that provided information on the number of brothers and sisters each student has.

Sharing the Planet—Recycling
In this unit, students discovered what happens to trash after it leaves the house. They discussed how we could help the Earth by reducing, reusing, and recycling trash. They classified recyclable materials into groups: paper, plastic, glass, metal, and cardboard.

We discussed how to live a healthy lifestyle with many activities including reading stories, watching videos and playing games. We discussed how to protect your teeth, exercising, and the difference between health and unhealthy foods.

We read a story about eating our way through the rainbow. We discussed fruits and vegetables of many colors. We then learned more about rainbows through a video, counting the colors in a rainbow, and making a rainbow with paints, cereals, and markers.
